This BMW 1 Series (E87) came to me with a customer complaint of an extremely loud knocking noise from the offside rear while driving.
After carrying out a thorough inspection of the rear suspension, I quickly identified the cause of the noise. The rear shock absorber mount had failed, allowing excessive movement and creating the loud knocking sound.
To restore the suspension to full working order, I carried out the following repair:
- Fault diagnosed following suspension inspection
- Rear right shock absorber replaced
- New rear shock absorber mounts fitted
- Suspension checked and road tested to confirm the noise had been eliminated
Suspension noises should never be ignored. Knocking, clunking or rattling sounds can indicate worn or damaged components that not only affect comfort but can also impact the vehicle’s handling and safety.
